Skin Care for Your 50’s

Contrary to how a woman (or man) may start to feel as they travel through mid-life, it is never too late to start a good anti-aging skin care routine. At Advanced Laser & Skin Cancer Center, we treat the full variety of medical skin conditions with personal attention to the desired outcome. Additionally, we enjoy helping patients find ways to promote ongoing dermatologic health.

It is during your 40s when you may start to see the slightest inkling of sun damage. Then, once you enter into your 50s, the consequences of UV exposure seem to occur out of the blue. Obviously, you know that concerns like crow’s feet, hyperpigmentation, and loose skin came about gradually. Once these conditions have become concerning, there is no going back. There are, however, steps you can take to replenish dry, sagging skin, no matter how old you are.

Loose Skin
The loose skin that appears during our forties and fifties is a result of collagen depletion. For women, there is a double-whammy to the skin in terms of collagen. Production naturally slows with age, then drops significantly during the years just before menopause. Sun exposure also effects collagen, but not the production of this protein; it’s condition beneath the skin. The more UV light that is absorbed by skin cells, the more frayed collagen strands become. Over time, this breakdown adds up to a significant loss of support. Collagen repair is essential for firmer, smoother skin. This may be facilitated with the daily use of sunscreen, and also with professional spa treatments like chemical peels or microdermabrasion. It is important to know that collagen cannot be “put into” the skin; it must be synthesized by the body. Supplementation with vitamin C has been said to aid in collagen synthesis.

Fine Lines and Wrinkles
Fine lines and wrinkles take over aging skin for a number of reasons. Sun damage, collagen depletion, loss of moisture, and other factors can make you feel self-conscious about looking older than you are. Fortunately, non-surgical treatments for wrinkle-reduction are available for individuals who want a refresher! Patients of our Teaneck dermatology practice may rediscover their younger self with safe, effective Botox treatment.

Give your skin the nourishment it needs and enjoy lasting youthfulness.
