Fillers Q & A

What are fillers?

Dermal fillers are injectable substances that add volume to select areas of the body, typically the face or hands. The most common reason to get dermal fillers is age-related facial volume loss.

You lose collagen, which gives your skin volume and firmness, and elastin, which maintains skin elasticity, incrementally over the years. Most people notice less facial volume (thinning cheeks), folds around the nose and mouth (nasolabial folds), and thinning lips sometime in their 30s or 40s. Fillers treat all of these issues with instant results.

Fillers can also provide desired contours in your face, such as more pronounced cheekbones or more defined lips.

What types of fillers are available?

Advanced Laser and Skin Cancer Center offers the leading filler brands, including:

Hyaluronic acid fillers

Hyaluronic acid fillers, including Juvéderm® XC and Restylane ®, are made of hyaluronic acid, a naturally-occurring substance in the body that maintains skin hydration and firmness.

Juvéderm and Restylane add synthetic hyaluronic acid where you need volume. Hyaluronic acid molecules can bind with up to 1000 times their weight in water. The water expands the hyaluronic acid molecules, increasing volume immediately.

Hyaluronic acid fillers are effective in the nasolabial folds, drooping lines at the corners of the mouth, thin cheeks, and thin lips.

Radiesse®

Radiesse is made of calcium hydroxylapatite (calcium-based gel microspheres). It stimulates collagen growth in the deep layers of your skin to help you grow new facial volume over time.

You’ll see immediate results with Radiesse, and when the gel dissolves, you’ll have your own new collagen to extend the results. Radiesse improves volume in the nasolabial folds and other facial wrinkles. You can’t use Radiesse in the lips, but it’s FDA-approved for use in the back of the hands.

Fillers are a great choice for the middle and lower portions of your face, but not for the eye and forehead areas. In those areas, wrinkles happen mainly because of muscle contractions, and that issue is best treated with Botox®

Your provider can help you choose the dermal filler that meets your goals most effectively.

How long do fillers last?

Fillers can last from six months to two years, depending on the formula. Cosmetic dermatology treatments like chemical peels and laser procedures may extend your results as long as possible.
