Here, we discuss details about each hair restoration treatment to help you determine why ARTAS may be the best choice for you.
NeoGraft and ARTAS hair restoration treatments are both categorized as Follicular-Unit Excision (FUE) methods of hair transplants. This involves the removal of individual hair follicles from a donor area without the use of incisions. The benefit of FUE is that there are no linear scars left on the scalp and less time is needed for healing. This is in comparison to Follicular unit transplantation (FUT), which was once the most efficient method of transplanting hair. This method involves the removal of a strip of tissue from the scalp from which to harvest follicles.
NeoGraft treatment is performed by a specialist who obtains follicles using a handheld device. The device works via suction and air pressure to remove individual follicles from the scalp. During treatment, the operator fits the device over an electronic punch tool. This instrument cuts circles measuring approximately 1mm around follicular units, which have 1 to 4 hairs. Grafts are collected in a container to await transplantation once the desired number of follicles have been harvested.
The process can take from 2 to 4 hours, harvesting between 1,500 and 2,000 individual grafts to restore thickness in a balding area. The operator is entirely responsible for the process, which creates room for human error.
ARTAS is a Follicular-Unit Excision method that is assisted by a robotic device. The ARTAS system is controlled by a sophisticated computer program. However, the operating physician is in control of every aspect of the process. Before dissecting follicular units, the ARTAS device maps out every follicle in the donor area. This map is assessed by the computer program for the quality, density, directions, and angles of all hair follicles before any harvesting begins.
The device selects donor hairs based on parameters input by the physician. Units can include single hairs or units of 2 or more hairs depending on the patient’s needs. The physician also controls the boundaries and spacing for the harvest area. This provides the most precise section of the best possible grafts.
One of the significant differences between the ARTAS technique and NeoGraft is that, thanks to the use of robotics, up to 1,000 grafts can be obtained in an hour. This shortens the overall treatment time without compromising precision.
