What Not to Do After Botox

Botox is a leading cosmetic treatment among adults of all ages. This injectable, FDA-approved drug does more than smooth wrinkles like crow’s feet and worry lines. It is also administered to temporarily stop excessive sweating and raise drooping eyebrows to restore symmetry and openness at the top of the face. Getting Botox is so common that people may do so without thinking about what they might do before and after their appointment, and how what they do may affect their initial treatment outcome. Here, we want to point out a few things not to do after getting Botox. Even if you’ve had several sessions with us or another provider, you can benefit from a refresher.

After Botox, Don’t . . .

Get Too Comfortable

Of course, we want you to be comfortable after your Botox treatment. You can expect to resume most of your normal activities as soon as you leave the office. What you shouldn’t do, though, is head home and take a nap. Patients are advised to stay upright (that also means no yoga!) for 4 hours after their appointment. This helps prevent the spread of the Botox liquid away from its intended area. Lying down too soon can also increase the risk of bruising.

Head to The Gym

Many people exercise daily to maintain their general wellness. Their routine may change for a short time if they want to correct the signs of aging using injectables like Botox or dermal fillers. To avoid unnecessary swelling and bruising, patients should wait at least 24 hours before heading back to the gym. Depending on how intensely you work out, you may benefit from a few days away from your normal routine. Walking can resume the day after treatment. What providers want patients to avoid is a significant elevation in heart rate.

Drink Alcohol

We know, Happy Hour is called that for a reason! However, if you consume alcohol the day before, day of, or day after getting injectable treatment, you may not be as happy as you could be. Alcohol thins the blood so, if you drink around the time of getting Botox, you have an increased risk of bruising.

Heat Things Up

Like exercise, heat increases flushing and can lead to unwanted swelling, redness, or bruising. If bruising occurs after injectables, it can take up to two weeks to resolve. To prevent this, wait a day or two to sit in the sunshine, take a steamy shower, or sit in a sauna or hot tub.
