October is Eczema Awareness Month

October is Eczema Awareness Month. During Eczema Awareness Month, events are held throughout the country to educate the general public about the chronic skin disorder eczema, which impacts millions of Americans. Symptoms of the condition vary, but usually include dry, red, itchy patches on the skin.  Eczema can appear anywhere on the body, but usually occurs on the insides of the arms or behind the knees.

How to Prevent Eczema Flare-Ups:

While the exact cause of eczema in unknown, there are a number of triggers which may contribute to an eczema outbreak, or flare-up. Avoiding triggers is the best way for a patient to reduce their chances of an eczema flare-up. Common triggers include:

  • Clothing or items made of rough materials, such as wool
  • Stress
  • Animal dander
  • Extremely cold or hot weather
  • Household items, including soaps, or detergents that contain skin-irritating perfumes

Treatment Options for Eczema:

It’s important for patients with eczema to avoid scratching their rashes, since scratching can lead to an infection that will require antibiotics. Treatment options for eczema include:

  • Moisturizers
  • Oral antihistamines
  • Prescription medications
  • Topical corticosteroids
  • Ultraviolet light therapy

While there is no cure for eczema, effective management of the condition will improve the appearance of the patient’s skin, and enhance their overall quality of life.
