Skin cancer kills 2 people every hour in the United States, but in many cases it is also, thankfully, preventable and treatable. Read on for some more facts about skin cancer and how you can take steps to avoid this deadly disease.

Skin cancer facts

Early detection and treatment can make all the difference if you have skin cancer – and it is something that you can watch out for yourself. Here are some other facts about skin cancer:

1. There are 3 main types of skin cancer: basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and melanoma. Melanoma, the least common, is the most deadly, because it is most likely to spread to other tissues. It can develop anywhere, even on skin that is never exposed to the sun. Squamous and basal cell carcinomas are usually found on skin that is often exposed to the sun.

2. If you’ve had skin cancer once, have a family history of skin cancer, have very fair skin, or have had serious sunburns in the past, your risk of getting skin cancer is increased.

3. People with darker skin are also at risk for skin cancer – it doesn’t just affect those with lighter skin tones.

4. Skin cancer that is diagnosed early is easier to treat, and treating it early can increase the odds of recovery.

5. If you have an unexplainable change in your skin, you should see your doctor right away. It may be cancer if you have a mole that changes in color or size or a lesion that is burning or painful.

6. Preventing skin cancer is preferable to treating it! Make sure you take precautions: avoid tanning beds; always apply sunscreen, even on a cloudy day; wear clothing that covers the skin; and don’t forget sunglasses, which not only protect the eyes from sun damage but also the skin around the eyes.
