Historically, humans have faced the onset of aging with a certain sense of dread. This may have to do with the widespread belief that the telltale signs of aging on the face and body cannot be reduced once they occur. Recent innovation in aesthetic medicine is proving otherwise. We are pleased to have the opportunity to help patients of our Teaneck, NJ dermatology office feel better about their appearance with treatments like Restylane®.
Facial Rejuvenation with Restylane
The reason why we develop lines, wrinkles, jowls, and other concerns as we age has to do not only with collagen and elastin, but also with water. During our youth and into young adulthood, there is an abundance of hyaluronic acid (HA) beneath the surface of the skin. Hyaluronic acid a carbohydrate molecule that is largely responsible for the integrity of connective tissue. HA is found in our joints and eyes, as well as the skin, where it forms a gelatinous matrix around cells. What the presence of hyaluronic acid does is holds water molecules in vital areas. In the skin, this is one of the reasons we enjoy plump cheeks and lips and smooth contouring across the jawline.
Like collagen, hyaluronic acid also becomes depleted with age. Natural deterioration of this sugar compound is exacerbated by UV exposure, making it difficult to avoid the development of lines, wrinkles, and volume loss.
We use Restylane to correct these problems.
How Does Restylane Work?
Restylane may not be the most well-known hyaluronic acid filler, but it was the first to be approved by the FDA for facial rejuvenation. This product reduces the appearance of lines and wrinkles by plumping superficial tissues with water, the way that nature intended. In addition to binding with water molecules, the hyaluronic acid in Restylane products also incites a proliferation of collagen, which promotes optimal rejuvenating effects.
What areas does Restylane treat?
Restylane is a family of soft tissue fillers that has been formulated to treat a variety of concerns.
The first of the Restylane product line was Restylane-L. This filler Is commonly used to treat mild to moderate lines and creases caused by aging and volume loss and laxity in dermal tissues. Additional uses include scar correction, undereye puffiness, and jowl correction.
Individual Restylane products have been formulated to treat specific concerns in the best way possible. Using NASHA technology, the makers of this product family have made it possible to meet specific needs through varying particle sizes of active ingredient within each product. For example, Restylane Lyft is formulated with denser particle sizes in order to add structure to cheeks that have begun to sage. Restylane Silk, on the other hand, has smaller hyaluronic acid particles that are suitable for fine lines and lip augmentation.
Lip Augmentation with Restylane
Some people lose volume in the upper or lower lip with age. Some never had it. In either case, it is possible to get the silky smoothness and voluptuous volume that is desired by adding supportive hyaluronic acid to the lips in the form of Restylane Silk. Like other products in this family, Restylane Silk was the first HA filler to gain FDA approval for its intended purpose.
Lip augmentation with Restylane Silk isn’t always performed to add volume to thin lips. Additional reasons patients choose this product include plumping narrow lips and eliminating fine lines around the mouth. Because particle size is small, the consistency of this filler is smoother; ideal for the delicate nature of the lips.
Pre and Post Op Instructions for Restylane
Instructions for pre- and post-treatment care for Restylane are similar to other fillers. In the week prior to treatment, patients are encouraged to avoid excessive alcohol consumption and the use of aspirin, essential fatty acids like flax oil, and gingko biloba. The day before treatment, a low-sodium, low-sugar diet is recommended. Supplements may be reintroduced 48 hours after treatment. Finally, it is ideal to schedule filler treatment at least one week away from laser treatment or chemical peel.
After filler treatment, it is advisable to avoid excessive heat such as sauna treatments, as well as strenuous exercise. Sun exposure should also be handled with care. Most patients are able to return to work and other normal activity immediately after their visit with us.
How long will the results of a Restylane treatment last?
The hyaluronic acid in Restylane products is absorbed by the body over time. How quickly this occurs is dependent upon a number of factors, including the product selected and your own body’s metabolism. Generally, results are said to last from six to twelve months.
